In today’s post, I want to talk about 3 bad skincare habits everyone should break. These are really easy habits to break and I’ll share some great alternatives…Let’s get into it :)
- Picking your face. This is such a bad habit, and it can range from anyone – teenager to adulthood – all of us have to stop doing this.
Oftentimes, picking your face = perfectionism. A lot of people who pick their face look totally fine, might have one little mini breakout and then go crazy. You take out the big mirror, look at it, start picking and when you wake up in the morning, it’s 10x the size and super red. You know that if you would’ve just left it alone in the first place, it wouldn’t have gotten irritated. Perfectionism is something that we should all really work on NOT having.
This can also be associated with anxiety. Sometimes people will pick their face so mindlessly. It’s interesting to look at things that you wouldn’t think would have anything to do with something deeper, but a lot of times they can. If this sounds like you, I recommend looking into it, and dig deep to figure out when you are doing it and why.
The reason this is so bad is because (1) your hands are usually not clean when you’re touching your face, and (2) when you’re squeezing it, unless you’re at an aesthetician or dermatologist’s office, and they’re extracting out a breakout properly, you’re most likely just going to be pushing the bacteria back into your skin- this will lead to more breakouts, you’ll inflame the area and can cause scarring. Try to focus on something else …some of my favorites are drinking herbal tea or eating frozen fruit.
- Tanning beds. I assume that we all know these are bad, but there are still some people out there that go in tanning beds. When you’re in a tanning bed, it’s so close to your face. I recommend avoiding the sun, in general- always having sun protection and making sure you’re in shade. Also, tanning beds are mostly UVA radiation. This gives you a lot of premature ageing signs and symptoms (e.g. wrinkling, sagging skin, loss of firmness, discoloration). The effects of tanning are super delayed, so you might not see them until years later. Going into tanning beds and having that UV radiation causes a 75% increase in melanoma. This is not something to take lightly. A little alternative is an organic spray tan.
- Pillowcases. Anyone using the same pillowcase for days at a time, especially if you are suffering from acne or breakouts, I highly recommend changing your pillowcase. I literally like to change my pillowcase at least every 2 nights. So much bacteria gets on them …think about what you do during the day or even the oils from your hair. The problem is that your face is pressed up against that pillow for 6-8 hours a night. I also really like a silk/satin pillowcase to prevent wrinkles and fine lines. One hack I like to do if you can’t do laundry all the time or don’t have a million pillowcases is to literally take a t-shirt and put it over the pillow. This has been a huge contributor for me to prevent acne.
Can’t wait for you guys to implement these :)
